Hello there. My name is Alex and I have the most amazing fur coat – my pictures just don’t do it justice so you will have to come out and meet me!! I am between 1-3 years of age and such a very sweet boy (so the humans tell me), I love to get pets and go for walks, and a dog cookie once in a while is not a bad thing.

I’m looking for a family who will teach me some tricks. I see some of the others doing this paw shake thing, but no one has ever taken the time to teach me how to do it. Could that be you? I’ve been really working hard on my leash manners and am doing so well – if I do say so myself woof woof woof. I’m a quiet boy who is house trained, crate trained and I love the company of other dogs so if you have a dog already I’d love to meet him or her and perhaps we could make your pack bigger woof woof woof.

If you are interested in adopting Alex, please complete the adoption application. Once the application has been received and reviewed (usually takes between 48-96 hours) we will be in touch to set up a meet and greet with this funny fella.

Alex’s adoption fee is $500. and includes his neuter and up to date vaccinations.

Are you looking for a small dog with a big heart? Xiao Wang may be just the dog for you!

This little girl is about 10 pounds, very easy going – enjoys a romp on her leash or spending a quiet evening at home with Netflix and some dog treats – and is looking for a human to call her very own. She would do well in a home where she can have her own bed and a place in a humans heart. Xiao Wang is house trained, crate trained and is good in the house. She is great on a leash, and secretly wants a family who will get her a leash with a bit of sparkly bling and just maybe a faux fur jacket for those chilly nights.

If you are interested in adopting this wee princess, please complete the adoption application. Once the application has been received and reviewed, a member of the team will be in touch to set up a meet and greet.

Xiao Wang’s adoption fee is $500 and includes her spay, up to date vaccinations and micro-chip.

Tilly was part of a group of dogs who were rescued from a breeding operation in the fall of 2017. When these ladies made their way to Carter’s they had not walked on grass, had not known pets and love, and had never lived the typical dogs life with a family and a dog bed to call their own. Their skin was so broken down from living on concrete their entire lives, and they were really not sure of what to do when let out in the yard to have a short play.

The initial veterinary check of these sweet girls revealed some underlying medical issues, and all required spaying. Due to the number of times these girls were breed, spaying was very difficult as their tissues were paper thin. We very nearly lost each and every one of them during the procedures. We, at the rescue, provided much love and began to build trust with these sweet girls, and once they were healthy enough we put them out for adoption and were very selective in finding them their forever perfect homes. They deserve nothing but love and kindness for the rest of their days.

Jameson and his family came out to meet Tilly on a lovely fall day, and we could tell that it was love at first sight. Tilly was so excited to go for a walk with this new family, and snuggled with each of them during play time.

Jameson decided he wanted to share his dog’s rescue story with his class, as well as bring her to meet his classroom. He prepared this story. What this young man had done is amazing. Bringing to the forefront how important it is to look at rescues for your new 4 legged family member. We as a rescue are so blessed to have him share this with us. Thank you Jameson and your wonderful family

Rescuing dogs, and running a rescue facility is definitely not for the faint of heart. It’s dirty work, it’s tiring work, it’s emotionally draining, it’s financially draining, it’s wake you up at 2am to facilitate a rescue for a dog in imminent danger, and it’s often thankless. To be a member of a volunteer rescue organization also creates stress as there never seems to be enough hands or money to do what’s needed, but we juggle professional and personal lives to make sure that we are there to ensure all that needs to happen, happens. Creating dog bios for posting, reviewing adoption applications, doing reference and background checks for potential adopters, arranging vet clinic visits for check-ups and immunizations, and arranging transportation for those visits, fundraising to pay for the vet bills (over $200,000.00 in 2017), not to mention feeding, grooming, kennel cleaning, laundry, ensuring yard time and walks and behavioural training sessions for those so challenged by their past that we wonder if they’ll ever learn to trust again is like conducting an orchestra with a volunteer cast. And then there are those individuals who call into question our character and our motives because we’ve made a decision that they think is wrong. The verbal abuse, the social media negative comments, the threats to personal safety all have come into play over the past few years. Some days we wonder if it is all worth it. Then we look at the dogs and say yes, it is. We are making a difference, one dog at a time. We couldn’t do this without our dedicated volunteers who also believe that each and every dog is unique.

I write this after a couple of bad weeks and bad experiences that make me shake my head and wonder why we continue to be so very involved in rescuing dogs that have been hurt, that have been used for nefarious reasons, that come to us physically and emotionally damaged requiring not only veterinary care but love and patience and kindness. And those who are surrendered from families that they love for reasons sometimes not understandable to us, and certainly not understandable to the dog who’s whole world has been turned upside down. And I wonder about the humans who are behind these sad stories and I question humanity as a whole. But then I’m reminded of what a very intelligent man once said: “Rescue: It’s not just a verb, it’s a promise”, and I reflect on all those loving dogs, despite their previous circumstances, who just needed a second (or sometimes third) chance to be all they could be once they were introduced to their new forever family and I feel the joy and soul satisfaction for doing one small thing to change the life of not only the dog, but the new family who now experience such unconditional love and trust when the dog realizes they are safe and home. And my belief in humanity is restored when humans want to provide these dogs with a second (or third) chance, and see the joy on their faces when they meet ‘the one’.

Our adoption process is rigorous. We screen each and every adoption application that arrives. We ensure that we find the perfect match. Do we miss the mark sometimes? Yes. We are human, our adopters are human. Sometimes the picture of the dog that caught someone’s heart is not the dog that they imagined when they decided to welcome a dog into their home. Thankfully these situations are few and far between, but they do happen. And we work with that family to make things work.

Our intake process for those dogs who are being surrendered is also rigorous. We ask that the surrendering human provide truthful information, including behavioural issues, prior to agreeing to the surrender. We support these humans through difficult decisions, and when possible, update them. The dog is assessed at admission and allowed a few days of ‘decompression’ prior to putting the dog out there for adoption. There are times, however, and thankfully few, where the dog has had no previous veterinary or dental care, no training, or has been aggressive with children or other dogs, where we try our best to rehabilitate either through veterinary care or behavioural interventions. Sadly, despite all these interventions there are times, in consultation with our vet that behavioural euthanasia is the only option. In the case of the aggressive dog we consider the safety of both the dog and the humans. We have, in the past, reached out to other rescue partners for assistance who may have resources we do not and may be able to make a change for the best. But we always consider the dog, and our duty to keep that dog safe. Perhaps a dog is triggered by children and poses a risk to little ones. Could the dog be re-homed into a family with no children? Possibly. But we then have to consider that just because the new home doesn’t have young children, this does not mean that the dog won’t be exposed to them. These behaviours could limit the neighborhood walks and limit the ability to safely have children visit. This decision is based on the risk assessment that the vet and the rescue volunteers discuss, and is never an easy one. The same holds true for those dogs who come to us with medical conditions for which there is no cure. Our mandate is to keep them with us, in sanctuary, until such time that it is the kindest thing for the dog to be let go. All of these dogs live in our hearts and are remembered with love. There are often tears at rescue.

So, for today, I will continue on this rescue journey. I will snuggle my own rescue guy and I will snuggle those still waiting for their home, as will all the other volunteers at Carter’s. I will advocate for and educate about rescues. I will love them with all my heart and be sad when the ‘perfect’ adoption falls through, or we are told that they have a medical or behavioural condition for which there is no treatment or cure. I will reflect on the joys of finding the perfect home for a dog, and the delight we see on the humans faces when we make the introductions. I will remember the happy tears as one of the dogs goes off to their new home, with their new family. I will try not to stress about the ongoing financial concerns, but will work diligently to raise awareness, and perhaps some funds, to keep doing what we do. We rescue dogs. We find our rescued dogs the best homes and we take comfort when we see all the sweet pictures of them in their new homes, being loved by their new humans, and in return being the best dogs they can be!

The same intelligent individual whom I quoted above also said, “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing”. I pledge to look wide eyed and open minded and to continue on this journey, despite the stresses and challenges, because each dog deserves that.

We at Carters would like to take a moment to wish all of you all the very best in the New Year!

We would also like to gratefully thank all of those who volunteer their time and energy to ensure that the dogs are well and happy, all those who brave the elements and the highways to help transport pups from all corners of the planet, all those who provide us with the best vet care a dog could woof for, all those who donate their used linens to keep the pups comfy, to all those who have opened their hearts and homes to help us foster some of the more timid pups and to all those that donated funds – we appreciate you all, more than you know!!!

To all who adopted in 2017 – thank you!! Helping these dogs find their forever home is our priority and each and every one of our adoption dogs takes a piece of heart with them when we go.

To all who are considering adding another member to your pack, 2018 will be a great year to do just that – so many loving, funny, bouncy, snuggly dogs are searching for their forever human.

Finally, as the new year approaches, we look forward to continuing our partnerships with international rescues.

These AMAZING dogs are just a few of the dogs at Carter’s that have been rescued from the horrendous conditions in China. These guys survived the AWFUL Dog Meat Trade…..when sooooo many other’s have not. Despite their horrible beginning, these dogs have the SWEETEST dispositions. They may not trust at 1st, but the fact that they are able to after a little bit of time with us is a true testament to just how amazing these guys are!!! Without the generosity of our amazing followers, these rescues would not happen. But its not over….its FAR from over. We rely on all of you to help us continue doing what we do. We are in constant need of donations to help us with their vet care, and daily care. Hopefully in our lifetime we will see an end to the Dog Meat Trade….and while we wait for that to happen, we will continue rescuing these helpless babies, and lobbying for an end to it. Please share….share their pictures, share their stories, and in turn, they will share their love with you all.

Have you ever met a dog, and INSTANTLY felt a connection?? Connection so deep that you knew you would do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to give her the best life???

Well, this is the story of such dog…Chanel

Chanel was surrendered to us after her owner knew he could no longer provide her with the level of care she required. She came with a horrible skin condition, and her breathing was really bad. We knew immediately that something was wrong. We got her into the vet right away to get her assessed, and the vet advised us that due to her improper breeding, her chest was compressing on her lungs. They recommended seeing a specialist and surgery. It was clear as well that this poor dog had had at least one litter of pups (she is only about 1.5 years old).

Chanel is the product of backyard breeding. Trying to “design” a dog. She is a bully breed….but no-one is sure what exactly is in there. She is the cutest little gremlin walking though ?.

The back yard breeder is the single greatest cause of pet overpopulation. The results of back yard breeding are devastating. The majority of homeless or abandoned dogs come from this category in many popular breeds and mixes (“designer” dogs). Most are sold locally through newspaper ads, Kijiji, Facebook.

Back yard breeders may act on a desire to make extra money, or simply out of ignorance. They see how much money legitimate breeders charge for pups and figure they could make some “easy money” too. Or, a back yard breeder may have a completely unplanned litter by accident, but in our eyes there is no accident if your dogs are not spayed/neutered.

Back yard breeders usually bring two breeding animals together regardless of their quality. They are not interested in scientific breeding. Their aim is to fulfill a personal need or goal, not to improve the breed and bring excellent quality dogs to the world. Since breed excellence is generally unimportant, the breeding dogs generally will not have been tested for genetic and health problems.

Although you might think your paying less for the breed of your choice from a back yard breeder, it’s almost a given that in the long run, you’ll pay a good deal more in vet bills and perhaps emotional bills (if the dog has to be euthanized due to a health or temperament problem).

Who ends up suffering?? Is it fair to Chanel that she had to leave the only home she had ever known? Is it fair that she had to be put under for surgery and almost DIED last week? What about the fact that the vets can’t fix her perfect imperfections, and her life will likely be cut short??

NO! NO! NO! It is the greed of irresponsible back yard breeding that has caused this. None of this is fair to Chanel. But yet her and so many other dogs like her end up in our rescue or worse, euthanized because of these people.

How can YOU help?? How can YOU make a difference?? STOP searching for your dog or puppy on Kijiji and Facebook!! If people stop making a need for these dogs, then the demand will go down and these people will no be able to make money off these poor babies!! Share Chanel’s story…..explain to people what a backyard breeder is. Education is KEY!!! Advise people on the benefits of adopting their best friend, and how soooo many animals are in need each and every day.

Our only solace in Chanel’s story is that she will get to live out her cute little wiggly bum life with us loving on her and making sure she is safe

Liam Casey, The Canadian Press

Eighteen alleged fighting dogs that were facing a potential death sentence in Ontario will be sent to the U.S. for rehabilitation after a months-long negotiation to save their lives.

A Chatham, Ont., court has ordered three people accused of running a dogfighting ring to surrender ownership of the banned pit bulls to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which has been holding the animals since seizing them in October 2015.

The court further ordered the OSPCA — which had applied to destroy the dogs — to send the animals to a special facility called Dogs Playing for Life in Florida.

The Crown attorney, the OSPCA and the dogs’ three owners reached an agreement on a solution for the dogs in court last Thursday, lawyers for those involved said.

Dog Tales, an opulent dog rescue and horse sanctuary north of Toronto, played a crucial role in the negotiations by pledging to pay for the care and transport of the dogs. It is expected to announce details of the agreement regarding the animals Tuesday morning.

“I am super excited — it has been a long battle and I’m very happy that these dogs are getting this chance,” said Rob Scheinberg, who owns Dog Tales along with his wife.

Scheinberg said he fought hard for the dogs because he owned a pit bull for 17 years and is against Ontario’s breed-specific legislation that bans them.

It has been a lengthy legal journey for the dogs.

In the fall of 2015, police and OSPCA agents raided a compound in Tilbury, Ont., and seized 31 dogs — all pit bulls. The raid led to charges against four people and later a fifth, much of them weapons and animal cruelty charges, along with provincial charges for owning pit bulls.

During that raid, officials came across a grim scene in a building at the back of the property, behind a sign reading “Dirty White Boy Kennels,” as described by an OSPCA affidavit filed with the court.

Inspectors seized more than 200 items that day, documents said, including medical kits with injectable solutions and vitamin supplements, suture and skin staple kits, syringes and surgical tools, lists of names of dogs, training and weight schedules, a training kit with weights, muzzles and sticks, and harnesses “used for weight training.”

All of the dogs were found attached to chains that were tied to metal stakes in the ground. Inspectors also found anabolic steroids on site, according to court documents, and dogfighting contracts.

An inspector noted “that the majority of the adult dogs had severe scarring consistent with dog fighting. These scars were primarily located on the head, neck and forelimbs of the dogs.”

Three of those dogs were immediately euthanized for medical reasons and the remaining 28 underwent a behavioural evaluation by the American SPCA, which said 21 of those dogs were deemed a menace to society and could not be rehabilitated.

The OSPCA, however, had to apply to court to have the dogs destroyed for behavioural reasons, which led to a public outcry.

Three animal organizations lined up to intervene in the OSPCA’s application, with two going to court — Dog Tales and Animal Justice, an animal rights organization — which argued the dogs needed their own defence.

The judge denied those organizations’ attempts to intervene last December.

In February, Dog Tales launched a publicity campaign, called .savethe21, which featured celebrity endorsements from Richard Branson, Enrique Iglesias and Paris Hilton, pleading with the OSPCA and the Crown to save the dogs.

Kenneth Marley, a defence lawyer who represents the three people accused of running the dogfighting ring, said he and Dog Tales pushed for a second behavioural assessment, since it had been about 18 months since the first one.

That assessment was a turning point in the case, according to Marley, Dog Tales and the OSPCA.

“That second assessment has shown some slight improvement as a direct result of our daily care and some promise to go to rehabilitation,” said Jennifer Bluhm, deputy chief of the OSPCA.

One dog was deemed dangerous and the court ordered it to be euthanized.

Two other dogs died while in OSCPA custody.

According to the second assessment, which was submitted to court, Dog 10 “climbed over the wall of his own kennel, squeezed through a narrow opening, and then attacked and killed Dog 31 in her own kennel.”

The assessment said Dog 10 has a very “guarded prognosis” for re-training, but will be shipped to Florida in an effort at rehabilitation.

Marley said the other dog that died in OSPCA custody was “euthanized on an emergency basis,” but didn’t have further details.

The OSPCA did not answer questions about the deaths of both dogs.

The majority of the dogs seized are taking twice-daily doses of fluoxetine, the active mood stabilizing agent in Prozac, according to the assessment.

Seven other dogs that were seized, as well as 11 puppies born after, will also be transferred to facilities in the United States.

Scheinberg said he will drive the dogs down to Florida himself in a modified bus.

“I think for most of them the future is a good one,” he said.

Here at Carters we have been very blessed to get to know some dogs that have survived some horrible things in China. The people that help to get these animals out to safety are amazing This month we have taken into rescue 10 dogs from China. The following is from one of the rescuers working in that country, with a terrific network of supporters, to help these dogs lead a better life.

There is an address at the end of this post for those who wish to donate directly to those involved in this very special volunteer effort in China. Please consider donating.

Meet some of these terrific volunteers on the ground in China

Robin from England. Actively involved in helping the local shelter(s) in Kunming city by fundraising for and re-homing the many Yulin Survivors. Along with several personal rescues. Focusing mainly on promoting awareness, caring for Yulin Survivors and trying to stop Yulin

Beth from Canada. Truly found where she was meant to help once she arrived in China. Spearheaded the idea of bringing rescues together to get dogs safely to Canada. Now helps a few rescue organizations in China find loving, forever homes in Canada, by organizing flights, families/fosters, pick up in Canada, and rescue groups willing to help.

Amy, American Chinese, from HangZhou. Besides personal rescues, she has focused on sponsoring and helping local rescue groups and shelters, from providing supplies, medical care, and even building shelters. A large part of Amy’s work helps the community to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats through offering free sterilization.

From Left to Right: Emily from England, Hayley from Ireland, Eva from Canada, Aimee from Australia

These four girls, all based in Harbin, didn’t know each other before becoming a team. All working full-time as teachers, they met through their love of animals and passion to make a difference. By joining forces, forming Animal Rescue SHS, they knew that they would be stronger together, able to do more for the local animals. What started off small scale, with a rescue of 5 dogs in the first month from the slaughterhouse, has quickly become a very large operation, with an averaged of a new rescue every day. In North-East China, the harrowing rescue world is matched with an even more harrowing winter. With temperatures dropping to below -30 degrees in the winter for months at a time, the importance of rescuing these animals and keeping them safe is even more imperative.

Cindy from Canada (photo not available)

Cindy from Canada. Although she is married with three kids and a full-time corporate job, Cindy still manages to do so much for the rescue world. On only her fourth day in Shanghai, the family’s beloved dog, who had made the long journey with them, was killed. A month later she encountered her first street puppy and that’s where it all began for Cindy. She has continued to independently rescue dogs, as well as supporting many other rescues. Cindy additionally began a charitable initiative called ‘chongaiTAG’, which aims to educate and inform Chinese dog owners about the importance of displaying ownership, and involved the distribution of free “write-on” pet tags, which has been very successful.

This is their story . . .

In Western countries, like Canada, America, or England, it is becoming more and more common for people to consider adopting a new family member, as opposed to buying. Thankfully this means that places like Carter’s Forever Shelter and Rescue exist. Sadly, for China this isn’t really yet the case, it is not so common, but very slowly times are changing. Here in China, the animals are not protected the same way as they are at home, something that is easily sometimes taken for granted. Back at home there is outrage when there is an animal abuse case, and it will likely end in a prosecution of the guilty. This is something that is being worked on here in China, but with a population so dense, in a country so vast, changes obviously take a long time.

The accessibility and affordability of purchasing a tiny puppy here is a large part of why there are so many abandoned dogs. University students, living in dormitories of 8 or more, will very commonly purchase one at a night market or from a street vendor, to only realise that they aren’t allowed to keep it, or that the puppy is sick and they can’t afford it. So, they turf it out on the street. Others decide to spontaneously buy a puppy from these places, without any knowledge, find that it is ‘naughty’ and goes to the bathroom inside (because it’s a puppy!), or is actually very sick. Then, they turf it out.

Parvo, Canine Distemper and Canine Corona Virus are everywhere here. Many dogs don’t stand a chance if they are not vaccinated. Sadly the main thing that seems to be lacking, is the knowledge and education about these things we take for granted. When you actually sit and talk to a dog owner here in China, most often than not, they are just like any Western dog owner. They love their dog like their child, they would do anything for it. But, they just perhaps haven’t been shown and taught the same things we have. How positive reinforcement works far more effectively than laying your hand on a dog, how using a lead can save the dogs life in the city, and wearing an identity tag and collar at all times will at least give the dog a chance of being returned if anything happens. Stray dogs and cats are everywhere, no sooner do you pick up one, then you find another one.

This alone is a huge never ending battle, but then you add the Dog Meat Industry into it. China’s relationship with Dog Meat goes back a long way. Here it is sold as a delicacy, and at a much higher price than other meats. One of the most upsetting things about this industry, is the belief that the more stress, pain and torture the animal endures, the better the meat tastes. This means dogs are boiled alive slowly, skinned alive, beaten, cut, maimed, and have to endure it for longer than you dare even imagine, before succumbing to their awful fate. Thankfully, the majority of people do not support this industry at all, but of course, there are more than enough who do. What is definitely one of the most disgusting problems, is that so many of the dogs that wind up at the meat market are pets. Either lost, abandoned or even stolen. These are family members who once had names, who are house trained, can sit on command, can shake paws, can do so much, yet now are sentenced to death, by the most horrendous methods, and consumed. Yulin Dog Meat Festival is of course notorious worldwide, but despite outcries of disgust from other countries, and thousands upon thousands of Chinese Citizens, it still takes place every year. Including this year. During this festival alone an average of 12-15,000 dogs are killed by these methods and consumed. That is 1,200-1,500 on average a day, just at this festival. And outside of the festival, the dog meat trade can still be seen in even the most advanced cities. Here in China however, there are pockets of people all over the country trying to do something about it, and stop what we can. Foreigners and Chinese Citizens alike. With the Chinese social media app, WeChat, we have been able to connect and support each other, even though we may be miles apart. We all have our own stories of how we got started, but our passion, aims, and beliefs, are very much shared. We decided to work together to try and give as many dogs as possible the chance at having their happily-ever-after. Sometimes we are able to find great homes in China, but sometimes certain dogs really do not stand a chance at getting re-homed there. Having the opportunity to work with a place like Carter’s Forever Rescue and Shelter is a life-line for some of these dogs. Dogs which have been abused beyond anyone’s reckoning, dogs which really shouldn’t want to be anywhere near the human race yet time and time again amaze us with their forgiveness.

THE FLIGHT AND PREPARATION FOR ONE DOG TO FLY TO CANADA IS BETWEEN $500 AND $600. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN DONATING DIRECTLY TO ASSIST IN RESCUING THESE DOGS FROM CHINA, FUNDS CAN BE SENT TO Tigerlilly126@hotmail.com OR CONTACT US AT CARTER’S FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS. THANK YOU!

Lincoln, our stunning Rotweiller pup, is not only handsome but has the sweetest, kindest soul. He is loving and affectionate, sweet and calm. Lincoln has not had it easy in his short life. He has either suffered a reaction to his routine vaccines or he has had a stroke which has left him with no control over his bodily functions and problematic back legs. We are looking for a sponsor or sponsors to help us help Lincoln with these challenges. We would like to be able to have him on a regular schedule of chiropractic appointments, we would like to get him in to the 404 Clinic to take advantage of their hydrotherapy pool, we are changing him to a raw diet, and would like to explore acupuncture. He has such great potential and is a deserving boy. If interested in sponsoring Lincoln, please contact us.
